The book centers around Mark Acosta, a young intelligent man who after his father's death during his teens ends up with a broken home. Throughout his early years, he experiences many difficult situations that mark his life. His step-father and mother abuse him, his peers bully him, and life just seems to always kick him when he's down. The story begins with him transitioning into High School; it is during this phase that he begins writing a diary for his english class. Through his diary the reader can immerse him or herself into the mind of this troubled young boy who within time progresses into a vicious and manipulative man who later becomes a serial killer.
